The Gentlemen Statues – by Taiwanese sculptor Ju Ming

Installed: 2015

Location: AMA Plaza, Chicago / 330 N. Wabash Ave.

Purchased by Great Eagle Holdings, the parent company of Langham Hospitality Group

The artwork is part of Ju’s “Living World Series,” featuring eleven bronze plated figures draped in trench jackets and holding umbrellas.

“The statues are an ideal representation of the hotel and demonstrates the important part that art plays in our brand and overall company culture,” says Dr. K.S. Lo, chairman of Great Eagle Holdings. “We’re thrilled with the reception that our gentlemen have received from the public thus far and are looking forward to it becoming a renowned attraction for visitors and Chicagoans alike.”

The Langham Chicago has an impressive collection of artwork. More than 140 artists are showcased throughout the hotel including: Jaume Plensa; Judy Ledgerwood; Anish Kapoor; Monique Prieto; and emerging artists Michele Grabner; Jan Ticy; and Molly Zuckeran-Hartung.

Ju Ming is a Taiwanese sculptor. Gentlemen statues is made in his signature style, blocky and minimalist, the figures are reduced to the basic forms intentionally to embrace the inner spiritual qualities within the human bodies.

Ju Ming was trained as a woodcarver, apprenticed to Lee Chin-chuan as a teenager. He developed his skill and applied it to a range of media, including bronze, styrofoam, ceramics, and stainless steel.
