DISPLAY GARDENS
Chicago Botanic Garden has 25 display gardens.
I will post images of a few of these gardens.
THE CRESCENT – Both the Crescent and the Heritage Garden, which sits to the south, share a similar design scheme of crescent-shaped beds filled with seasonal plants.
HERITAGE GARDEN – The Heritage Garden is dedicated to Carolus Linnaeus, who established binomial nomenclature as the system of naming plants we still use today. Modeled after Europe’s first botanical garden in Padua, Italy, it is a circular space, divided into four quadrants. A large statue of Linneaus presides over the garden.
ENGLISH WALLED GARDEN – It is one of the Chicago Botanic Garden’s most popular places. It was designed by renowned English landscape architect John Brookes, Member of the British Empire (MBE). There are six unique garden rooms evoking a different mood, like the Cottage Garden and the Pergola Garden.
ROSE GARDEN – One of the most popular spots at the Chicago Botanic Garden. When the roses are in bloom—more than 5,000 of them—it’s hard to get beyond their shimmers of color and scent. The History of Roses Bed, tracks the development of the rose from the earliest wild rose to the modern hybrids, also provides context.
JAPANESE GARDEN – Rocks are believed to be the bones of the earth, an essential part of a Japanese garden. Flowering plants—such as iris, rhododendron, and plum—have a short bloom time, reflecting the yin-yang balance between the ephemeral existence of human life and the timelessness of nature. Many of the pine trees (which represent longevity in Japanese culture) are pruned and trained to give the illusion of age.
EVENING ISLAND – On Evening Island, five acres of hillside, woodland, and meadow gardens, surrounded by lakes, reflect ever-changing highlights throughout the year.

The Plant Evaluation program evaluates herbaceous and woody plants in comparative trials, ultimately recommending the top performers to gardeners and the horticultural industry. Approximately 1,000 taxa are currently evaluated in the Bernice E. Lavin Plant Evaluation Garden, Mitsuzo and Kyoko Shida Evaluation Garden, and the Green Roof Gardens.
