Batavia: Cormorants and their preferred perch
An ant infested dead tree is gathering a lot of attention in Batavia. The tree is being used by cormorants to perch and catch fish from the Fox River.
Recently the city of Batavia undertook redevelopment project, and demolished many buildings and cleared the dead tress and bushes on the east bank of Fox River to promote business in the area. The open space now provides a spectacular view of Batavia Riverwalk.
But in the cleaning effort, one dead tree was left untouched.
The one on which the cormorants perch.
The tree is ant-infested and is rotten to the core. It can topple anytime.
The city has made an alternative bird perch..
It is clear the birds are not responding to the man-made bird perch…
UPDATE: The tree was uprooted in the heavy rains of July 21-22, 2017.
Apparently a few cormorants have now adopted the man-made perch.
I am so glad I could take photos of the tree, just few days before it toppled on July 16, 2017.

I am so glad I could take photos of the “Cormorant Tree,” on July 16, 2017. That is just a few days before the tree was uprooted and toppled in the heavy rains of July 21-22, 2017. Apparently a few cormorants have now adopted the man-made perch.
