INDIANAPOLIS: MEMORIALS and MONUMENTS

While exploring Indianapolis, I noticed the preponderance of monuments and memorials. Then I learnt that Indianapolis devotes more acreage than any other U.S. city to honoring our nation’s fallen, and is second only to Washington, DC, in the number of war memorials. So well, my observation was to the point. In my very small trip to Washington D.C. I had explored some memorials.. click here..

Memorials and Monuments. Memorials are often related to death and destruction [Civil War Memorial, Vietnam War Memorial, Iwo Jima Memorial, World War II Memorial]. Monuments are for triumph and victories [Fort McHenry National Monument , Statue of Liberty Monument] . Memorials are related to somber remembrance and monuments are mark of celebrations.

Soldiers and Sailors Monument / Monument Circle: A tribute to the valor of Indiana’s soldiers and sailors who served in the Civil and Spanish American Wars. The monument is considered the largest of its kind in the United States that honors the everyday American soldier and sailor.

Indiana World War Memorial and Museum: This memorial honors the Indiana men killed in World War I. The Military Museum inside also lists all of the Hoosiers killed or missing in action through the Vietnam War. The cornerstone was set by General John J. “Black Jack” Pershing who was the American Commander in Europe during WWI. He died in 1948, and never saw the memorial complete.
