HAUZ KHAS COMPLEX

The Hauz Khas Complex is a fascinating place in Delhi. The neighborhood of Hauz Khas gets its name from a 13th century water-reservoir.  Hauz Khas means Royal Tank. Hauz Khas is derived from Farsi. The word ‘Hauz’ means “water tank”, and ‘Khas’ means “special / royal”. The “Royal tank”.

The large water tank or reservoir was first built by Allauddin Khilji to supply water to the inhabitants of Siri. The tank was de-silted during the reign of Firuz Shah Tughlaq (1351–88). Several buildings [including mosque and madrasa] and tombs were built overlooking the water tank or lake. Firuz Shah’s tomb pivots the L–shaped building complex which overlooks the tank. The entire complex today constitutes the ruins of Hauz Khas village. The Hauz Khas Complex is in the Hauz Khas neighborhood – one of the most affluent neighborhoods in South Delhi.
