Soma – by Flaming Lotus Girls

Soma is a representation of two neurons connected by an axon bridge,
using LEDs to represent the electrical impulses in the brain.

 It was originally created for the Burning Man event in 2009.

Soma, Definition: A soma is the cell body of a neuron, which consists of branching dendrites projecting away at different angles, and an axon, which conducts the nerve signal electrochemically to its neighboring cell.

This sculpture is a representation of two neurons connected by an axon bridge, using LEDs to represent the electrical impulses in the brain.

Soma features interactive LED lights to create a spectacular daytime and nighttime experience. The LED units, capable of producing 1.6 million colors, are individually controllable. The public is able to interact with Soma’s computer-controlled LED system directly by pushing buttons that activate a simulation of the trans-synaptic action. The LEDs go on at sunset, every night.

Soma is a representation of two neurons communicating with each other, magnified to monumental proportions. Soma prompts us to ask fundamental questions about neurological transmission and how it translates into human thought and consciousness. How can simple electrical impulses, which individually seem so small and inconsequential, come together to create something as incomparably complex as the mind?

The Flaming Lotus Girls are a San Francisco based volunteer organization creating large-scale works of interactive art. FLG combines sculpture, kinetics, robotics, pyrotechnics, and electronics to inspire and invite viewers into the environment of participation. Members of FLG are empowered to learn new skills and become cooperative, experienced artist, within the fluid organizational structure that emphasizes creativity, education, volunteer contribution and leadership opportunity.
