The bridge is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco, California, and the United States. It has been declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Perhaps the most frequently asked question, is why the name is Golden Gate?
The Golden Gate Strait is the entrance to the San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean. The strait is approximately three-miles long by one-mile wide with currents ranging from 4.5 to 7.5 knots. It is generally accepted that the strait was named “Chrysopylae”, or Golden Gate, by John C. Fremont, Captain, topographical Engineers of the U.S. Army circa 1846. It reminded him of a harbor in Istanbul named Chrysoceras or Golden Horn.

Video of my crossing the Golden Gate Bridge for the first time on April 23, 2015.
The Golden Gate Bridge was my dream destination. Always wanted to see it! Engineers speculated it would be impossible to construct, raising funds was another challenge as the construction started in 1933 during the Depression Era, and then there were other challenges: strong ocean currents, wind, fog. And then all the challenges were overcome, and this beautiful bridge – a symphony in steel – stands in front of us , 78 years young! Completed in 1937. I bet there are locations with better view. But that day, this is the site where our tour bus stopped for view/ photos of the bridge. There will be other time for more images. Crossed the bridge twice so not complaining!
