Presented by EXPO Chicago [2015], in partnership with the Chicago Park District [CPD] and Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events [DCASE].

Since the year 2014,  EXPO Chicago’s IN/SITU installation includes installations outside of Navy Pier.

Habakuk [Homage to Max Ernst] is welded from heavy stainless steel plates divided into three parts. Through the use of a vacuum pump, the outside air pressure ‘shapes’ the piece according to the preset circumstances designed by the artist. The final name of Ewerdt Hilgemann’s work always is decided after the process has come to a halt, depending on the associations it brings to the artist. In this case, the birdlike beak form recalls the sculpture Habakuk by Max Ernst, noted in the dedication of the title.

Hilgemann’s “implosion” process begins by fabricating perfect, geometrically pure stainless steel forms, which are meticulously welded and polished to satin gloss. After the pieces are complete, the artist slowly pulls the air out with a vacuum pump, putting the natural atmospheric pressure to sculptural use and collapsing the forms into their final shape. In a delicate balance of planning and chance each piece acquires individual character demonstrating unexpected and striking possibilities of the material.
