2015 MCA Plaza Project: Alexandre da Cunha

The sculptor Alexandre da Cunha is Brazil-born, London-based. He is known for finding creative ways to re-purpose found objects. Rarely making objects from scratch, Da Cunha instead finds wondrously creative ways to repurpose already-existing items, revealing their inherent if overlooked form, beauty, and mystery.

The exhibition is curated by Michael Darling, James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.

2015 MCA Plaza Project: Figurehead, Biscuit and Mix – by Alexandre da Cunha

This year’s MCA Plaza Project, showcases found objects like sewer pipes and cement mixer being used as art pieces. There are three sculptures in the MCA Plaza: Figurehead, Biscuit and Mix. “Figurehead” is three pieces of sewer pipes – like those under the city of Chicago – stacked vertically. “Biscuit” is mundane sewer pipes shown as a piece of art, simply by presenting it in unconventional way. “Mix” is a cement mixer he found in upstate New York.

“The Figurehead,” is big — almost 33 feet tall — and stands in the center of the plaza “like a modern building, and you can enter it.” It actually is three pieces of sewer pipes – like those under the city of Chicago – stacked vertically.

“Biscuit” is a smaller piece, a concrete disc (from the same supplier as the pipe) that is punctured with holes designed to reduce water flow. It is shown as a piece of art, simply by presenting it in unconventional way, on the side, revealing an everyday object’s inherent form and beauty.
