On August 3, 2014, I visited the studio of multi talented artist Jason Messinger’s studio in Cornelia Arts Building [CAB]. It is one of the largest All-Artist studio buildings on Chicago’s Northside. Established in 1986, it is located at 1800 W. Cornelia Ave. CAB rests in the epicenter of three distinct Chicago Neighborhoods; Lakeview, Roscoe Village, and Ravenswood/North Center. It holds quarterly open studios, that are free and feature work by local artists including painters, photographers, sculptors and more. It is conveniently located being close to public transportation – only two blocks south of the Addison Brown Line CTA stop, and has free parking available in parking lot out front and on neighborhood streets nearby.

I first met with Jason Messinger at the exhibition at Chicago Cultural Center at the exhibition “35 Years of Public Art”. He invited me to his Cornelia Studio. I readily agreed. I have anyways been visiting artist studios, as part of my series on Contemporary Sculptors of Chicago.  Jason Messinger is multi-talented artists and is much more than a sculptor.  His main interest is creating ceramic mural tiles. These are usually modular and can be configured in multiple ways.  But he also makes beautiful abstract sculptures, and these pair well with his ceramic tiles. He customizes his art according to the needs of his clients. In fact, what’s fascinating is that apart from being an artists. he he a writer and pens humor, essays, poetry, and fantasy fiction.

Jason Messinger’s Studio is a beautifully organized creative work space! It was a joy to behold the aesthetically arranged artworks – ceramic tile murals and sculptures – on the wall and floor space, creating a bright and joyful work and living environment! I was very impressed. The contrasting colors, the warm and cool colors, red-orange and green-blues never looked so harmonious! His artistic impulses permeates throughout his studio space and his entire persona blends into the uniquely personalized space he has created.
