Barcelona based conceptual artist Jaume Plensa has produced a rich body of work over the past 30 years and is best known in Chicago for Crown Fountain in Millennium Park. Plensa discusses his practice and engages in a dialog with moderator Reed Kroloff, Director of the Cranbrook Academy of Art and Museum, about art and architecture.

The Architecture Is Art talks series examines the intersections and blurred boundaries between the professional practice and creative process of architects and contemporary artists. The series explores how architects and artists identify their work, where they turn for inspiration, how their process and presentation materials are interpreted, and when it’s useful or necessary to distinguish the disciplines of art and architecture for viewers.

Above video: 18 minutes.. Jaume Plensa talks about his 30 years of work. The talk begins and ends with  Plensa talking about the Crown Fountain, Millennium Park, Chicago/..

Crown Fountain was obviously a very complex project, but finally very simple. It was an homage to the people of Chicago, and thanks to the kids who embrace it. It was a celebration of life. It was a celebration that we exist. Everyone feels free to enjoy the fountain in anyway.

The borders between architecture and sculpture are very thin.. probably.. dont exist. The only specific for architecture is that they have function. And I guess the strongest part of art is they serve for nothing. That is the most important quality of art. When something serve for something, has a function, and it is more in terms of design and I guess that is a good collaboration.  Architects have an amazing capacity to do beautiful bodies, but I guess an artist has the capacity to breathe life in it. And you know that is a good combination.

.

My main job is to create beauty and I guess the function of architect is to create comfort. And I think this collaboration is fantastic.

I guess the approach to a piece is just an intuition. I guess the beauty to be an artist is to  try to verify your intuition.. and every piece in some way is a potential verification of that intuition. You are talking about that piece in Calgary. We spent 40 years to make that piece which looks so simple. Sometimes the problem is not to make the piece, but to convince everybody that this is the piece that you should do it. Because I am so convinced, but not necessarily the rest of the world.  But that it is also a part of our job. And especially that piece.
