One day I was roaming around at Laguna Beach, and saw a sculptural fountain of a boy with his dog. Stopped by and took some photos. Never knew it was the city’s oldest piece of public art.
The “Boy and Dog” sculpture, created by Peabody for Sophie Kerr, in memory of a daughter and her love of animals, was among the artist’s most distinguished achievements.
Sculptor Ruth Peabody and her mother, Eleanor Coburn, were two of the city’s earliest, most prominent artists who helped make Laguna famous in the art world. Ruth Peabody was born in Highland Park, Illinois on March 30, 1893. She first studied sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago and was taught to paint as a child by her mother. The two women moved to Laguna Beach, California in 1924 and became active in the local art scene. In addition to painting, Ruth sculpted fountains and memorial plaques along with teaching art. Ruth first worked on creating fountain sculptures, such as this one, before turning to painting. This installation is the oldest public art sculpture in the City’s collection.
