Continuing with studio visits of Contemporary Sculptors of Chicago..
August 18, 2010: Visited studio of sculptor Ruth Aizuss Migdal .
.
Ruth Aizuss Midgal is a sculptor, who specializes in exploring human torso. She received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago [1954] and MFA from the University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois. Trained as a painter, she later became a sculptor exploring the human torso.
After a workshop in mold making at an International Sculpture Conference In Washington, DC in 1990, I switched to bronze. I concentrate on exploring the female torso in its many complexities. I continue to use bronze because of its permanence and flexibility. The sculptures vary in size and scale from larger then life to breast paper weights as small as three inches in diameter. The Public Sculpture with which I am now deeply involved, continued to explore the female torso in a larger then life scale. Fabricated in steel, they are celebrations expressed in dance and painted a vivid red..

Bronze sculptures – by Ruth A. Migdal

Ruth Aizuss Migdal studio visit on August 18, 2010.
Last week I had the pleasure of meeting with Ruth at her home. The day began with some informal chat over coffee, and then, she showed me her collection. Particularly impressive were her more “personal” bronze collection, which showcased her exploration of the complexities of female torso. If the names are any indication, she calls them – Amazon, Diana, Venus – which point to their exalted status in her collection. These bronzes are not in public display, as, in her own words..
“I am aware of how hysterical some viewers become when face with genitalia in a public place.”
