November 8, 2010: Met with Sculptor, Art Educator, & Public Artist Nicole Beck

Location: DeVry Instituite of Techniology in Chicago, where there is an impressive large-scale steel-&- bronze sculpture “Binary Project”, which is a collaborative effort by students of Gallery 37, with Lead Artists, Nicole Beck and Jim Brenner.

Nicole beck has worked on a lot of public and private commissions with sculptural installations spread nationwide. She has a diversified skill set which includes working with a multitude of materials: steel and stainless steel, bronze, wood, glass, mosaic and even landscape. Off late, Nicole has been enjoying murals and mosaics. In fact, before meeting her, the two outdoor installations I had seen -“Cold Spot: A Gulf Story”, and “Foxgloves and Fists” – are both mosaics and hugely popular with the public, especially children. But when I met her, I realized, she enjoys bronzes and steel installations, especially monumental projects. That’s a very impressive diversified portfolio..

The sculptures were designed & fabricated by Lead Artists Nicole Beck and James Brenner in collaboration with the Chicago Public Group, Gallery 37 and their select group of Chicago Public Schools high school Apprentice Artists.

Binary Project 2000, shows the multiple aspects of technology and it’s impact upon our lives and culture. The artwork represents a random binary code format [zeros and ones] stratified to configure larger zeros and ones from a distance.

The Binary Project sculpture has a many cast bronze images of ones and zeros [1’s and 0’s] with low-relief imprints inspired by different aspects of our technological world like genetics and cloning, space travel, architecture, wireless technologies, web systems, cryogenic, nanotechnology, and with sociological historical, scientific and abstract interpretations.
