Continuing with studio visits of Contemporary Sculptors of Chicago..

November 30, 2010: Visited studio of artist Lucy Slivinski.

.

When I entered her studio, I was gobsmacked by the eclectic beauty she creates using found objects and recycled materials. She uses wires, bottles, chains, pipes, glass, tail lights.. and transforms them into sensational artistic crafts. Her work are mostly abstract and are inspired by organic forms.

” I live in the collaborative space of ideas, conception and construction. My process with materials is focused on found objects integrated into conceptual art making, inspiring me by all connections and contributions. My work is the investigation of connectivity. I am both humbled and amazed at the regenerative power of life…. Through recycling, we have blessed opportunities to reshape things that are perceived as decay, into replenished mysteries of beauty.
I am a true believer and a seer of the creative possibility.”

Lucy explains that her inspiration for using recycled materials comes from her grandparents, ” who recycled as a matter of necessity during the Depression”. Observing them she could see the possibilities in applying these found materials.

I was very interested in her public art installations. She had just finished “Sliver Surfgate” decorative fence [350′ X 6′ X 1′] made from salvaged stainless steel tubing, vintage hubcaps, salvaged traffic light lens, and other found objects for the Logan Square Skate Park, Chicago, IL. Some other of her public commissions include “Mammoth” [2009] for Hidden Oaks Nature Center, Bolingbrook; “Surge”(Yellowwood Coral) for Bartholomew Recycling Center, Columbus, Indiana; and “Natural Rhythm” [2006] for Saint Cloud Library , St. Cloud, MN. Chicago also has “Hedgerow” [2006] made from Salvaged Tail Pipes, Tail Lights, Welded Construction at Grant Park – South Lawn.
